Asteros Silverglade squinted through the falling snow, staring into the darkness of Bareholde.
The scholars stepped back from their positions on the Rune-Wall, where they had bested yet another lock with their tricks. The nine stepped back, allowing the door to finish its elaborate opening process.
This chamber was not so hidden as Herqenâs, though it would likely have been near impossible to find without the hint from the Ancient Stonemasterâs writings. Something else awaited them here, hopefully. While the other Stonemaster had all but confirmed that Bareholde was simply another safehouse, Asteros was certain that this cavern would be more useful than the last.
Not that the information in Herqen hadnât helped them, for it had been what set them on this course initially. It was simply that Herqenâs walls omitted several vital pieces of information intentionally. Asteros couldnât blame the Stonemaster for doing such things, for it seemed that the information held a great deal of knowledge that was considered secret.
Yet not all were so wise. Asteros had no doubts that one of the Stonemasters who created these caverns would eventually reveal the information that they needed, which was how the Ancient Summoners managed to destroy half of the Ancient Sects.
âShall we, then?â Eithor rasped, his aging voice straining to be heard through the Frostfall.
Asteros looked around, locking eyes with each of the Shadow-Swifts standing on the small indenture in the mountain. They were ready.
âAfter you,â Tsarra said.
Asteros smiled slightly at the sharpness of her voice.
âKeep in mind that this cavern could very well be a waste of our time, your greatnesses,â Soran muttered, falling into line behind the six Shadow-Swifts. âThe odds of this cave possessing any additional information isâ¦â He trailed off as the first of the torches ignited. The entry hall of this cavern was far grander than Herqenâs. Rather than the small, cramped passageway of the other safehouse, before them lay a massive hallway filled with row upon row of torches.
In the very center of the room, there sat a slab of stone perhaps twice the size of a man. It looked jagged, uneven, accidental even. Yet Asteros could see, even from a distance, the faint indentures in it. It was inscribed.
âWhat is that?â Malik asked, taking the lead.
Asteros bristled a bit, but let it slide. The boy had been growing restless, and, during the evening that they had taken to refill their Crystals, he had hardly even slept. Of course, Asteros really hadnât rested much either.
âIt appears to be an inscription of some sort,â Eithor said, hobbling forward.
âAn important one as well, judging by the presentation,â Soran added, joining Eithor as they approached the stone. It was made of the same black rock as the rest of the cavern and appeared to have simply been left alone while the rest of the bunker had been carved out.
Asteros flicked his eyes to the darkened hallway at the end of the room. There was much more to be discovered in this place, yes. But this seemed like as good a place as any to start.
